Skills 4 Life Pediatric Occupational Therapy is an Alert Program® Affiliate and can teach your child the steps for developing self-regulation skills. “Self-regulation is the ability to attain, change, or maintain an appropriate level of alertness for a task or situation.” (Williams & Shellenberger, 1996) For example, having a high level of arousal and energy (“high engine speed”) is appropriate when playing a competitive football game, but not when one is trying to settle down to go to sleep. Having a low level of alertness/energy (“low engine speed”) is suitable for going to sleep, but not for listening attentively in class or doing schoolwork or homework. Difficulty with self-regulaiton may be manifested by excitability and restlessness, anxiety, or drowsiness and apathy. Karina can help your child identify, label, and modulate their level of alertness. Your child will develop a “toolbox” of various sensorimotor strategies to use at home, in school, and in the community.
